3L Care, the Winsford-based centre for people with complex health needs, caters for both full time residents and regular visitors. Here they can safely enjoy a range of facilities which have otherwise been out of reach or, at best, a rare occasion.
Under careful supervision by highly qualified nurses and carers, children and adults with complex needs can now enjoy a swim in a heated indoor pool, watch a film on the big screen in the centre’s own cinema or enjoy a luxury foot massage.
Marcus Tarrant, Director of 3L Care explains: “Experiences that many of us take for granted such as a swim or a trip to the pictures are often out of reach to people with complex health needs. But life is about more than just surviving; we want our visitors to enjoy themselves to the fullest whether it is with a private cinema experience or a relaxing swim in a place where they can be themselves – with space for family members and friendly, professional staff on hand. That is why we are currently offering new visitors a free trip to our cinema or a dip in the pool.”
You’d be pushed to find 3L Care’s facilities in mainstream care homes – something which needs to change according to Marcus: “As a society we both can and should raise the bar for how we look after people with complex care needs. Of course health and safety is important but it does not exclude people from enjoying life. There are a whole range of physical and emotional benefits from using a hydrotherapy pool and it has already become a real favourite with both our day visitors and full time residents.”
3L Care’s bespoke cinema facility has a wall-size screen, surround sound, comfortable chairs and sofas and space for wheelchairs. Visitors can chose from a range of films or bring their own which they can watch in comfort with support of professional nursing and care facilities. “With our cinema we wanted to replicate the real deal, but with the assurance of having state of the art care facilities in the room next door if required. Carers of young people and adults with complex health needs and severe disabilities sometimes just want them to enjoy a day out but struggle to find, for example, a cinema where they would be comfortable going. That is why we created our own cinematic experience where they can feel welcome, relax and not worry about making a mess or having to pause the film half way through,” Marcus explained.
59 year old Dorothy lives in Moulton with her son who is 38 and has learning difficulties. C has been a regular guest at 3L Care since December 2011 – spending about a week each month at the home in Winsford.
“My son absolutely loves the 3L Care centre. Last time he didn’t even want to come home! He particularly loves the cinema and the sensory room which is quite a unique facility,” said Dorothy.
Before the family discovered 3L Care, C faced having to go into an old people’s home for respite; an option his mother simply couldn’t accept. She said: “When it was suggested to us that my son would have to spend time in an old people’s home I simply couldn’t believe it. It would have been entirely inappropriate and I would encourage all families out there who are faced with the same scenario to challenge the local authority on such a decision.
“There simply aren’t enough places for people like Christian – adults of all ages with learning difficulties – to spend quality time. We have enough challenges without having to travel for hours in search of respite and care for my son.
“Thankfully the staff at 3L Care are fantastic and my son gets on so well with them all. They make a huge effort to ensure he has a great time when he is there. For me it makes all the difference knowing that he is safe, well cared for and given every opportunity to have fun and enjoy himself.”
3L Care is offering a free health assessment for anyone wishing to use the facilities where a qualified nurse will discuss any particular requirements and help tailor the entertainment appropriately.
The centre is open and staffed 24/7.
